About Arača Medieval Church Ruins

The Arača church ruins are among the most remarkable medieval monuments in Banat. They stand near Novi Bečej, surrounded by the vast plains. The monumental, three-aisled Romanesque basilica was built in the first half of the 13th century on the site of an earlier church dating from the 11th or 12th century. The building was damaged and rebuilt several times throughout its history. In 1370, it was restored at the initiative of Queen Elizabeth of Anjou, and the Gothic tower that still stands today was probably built at that time. A monastery was established beside the church in the late 15th century; archaeological excavations have uncovered its remains. Standing alone in the open landscape, Arača is now one of Vojvodina’s most significant examples of medieval architecture. Its striking setting, monumental walls and the atmosphere of the Banat plains make it a fascinating destination for visitors interested in history, nature and photography.
